Amidst a lag in the number of health workers in the country especially in the public health facilities, a road crash has taken the life of Dr. Charles Collins Morulem of Katakwi General Hospital.
This happened at around 6pm on Thursday 23rd March 2023 along the bad Usuk-Katawi road as he was returning to Katakwi town from his village home in Acowa.
At the time of his death, he was serving as a senior surgeon at the hospital and preliminary reports say he had an instant death by breaking his neck awaiting postmortem report.
The hospital superintendent, Dr. Simon Peter Odeng, confirmed the death adding that body was picked from the crash scene and currently kept at the hospital mortuary.
The incident happened when he collided with another motorcycle rider carrying another person and as having other two people who collided with him sustaining serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Uganda suffers about 12,036 deaths from road traffic crashes per year, with pedestrians accounting for 39% and 38% of registered road traffic crash fatalities ( 2018 and 2019 reports) and closely followed by motorcyclists at 23.8% and 27.4% respectively
Also 76% more males died compared to their female counter parts at 24% across the country.
It is however unclear the exact cause of the crash but some first respondents at the scene attributed it to the bad road condition and speeding without protective riding gears.
